Three questions to Falk Herkner, Managing Director at WALDRICH COBURG

How was the last year for WALDRICH COBURG?

From three points of view, my review is positive. WALDRICH COBURG hardly had to record a drop in sales because our orders are placed over a long period of time.

In terms of incoming orders, we did have a total decline of 24%, primarily in the area of standard machines and in service. This was also, and above all, due to the Corona-related travel restrictions.

Fortunately, we did not experience a decline in project machines, but order intake was concentrated in the months of November and December at year-end 2020.

Unlike other machine tool manufacturers, WALDRICH COBURG is not automotive-dependent, we have a different clientele and are more broadly positioned.

What is the outlook for fiscal 2021?

My outlook for the year 2021, which has just begun, is very positive. We currently have good capacity utilization in the project machinery sector and hope for good prospects for project orders in the first quarter to compensate for the gap from last year. Our target is orders for machines that can be delivered at short notice. We have high hopes for our TAURUS Gemini, which we will present at an in-house exhibition in the 3rd week of September, just before EMO week on September 27.

In addition, our goal is for our service business to pick up speed again.

The new order from Ukraine is one of the largest single orders in the company's history. The customer appreciates the WALDRICH COBURG quality and the close cooperation at all levels. This is particularly valuable when it comes to sophisticated gear technology.

Corona has been dominating our lives for a year, also at WALDRICH COBURG. What is the current situation?

For a long time, our employees were untouched by the Corona pandemic. We have already successfully implemented our prevention activities in March 2020. These include mandatory masks in the company, reducing the number of participants in the meeting rooms, disinfection facilities, temperature measurement in the entrance area, supplemented by online meetings and flexible working time models to ensure childcare, which became necessary due to school and daycare center closures.

Infection within the company was significantly reduced and virtually impossible as a result of these measures. The health department also did not impose any special conditions.

However, our engineers on the construction sites in China have considerable restrictions in their daily work; for Central Europeans, these severe restrictions on freedom of movement are unfamiliar. Overall, we are extremely confident about the business year and hope that together we will successfully master this pandemic.
